A DNS is a Domain Name System and it converts the domain name to IP addresses so that the Internet works. It consists of DNS server software and DNS client. DNS client put a request for converting domain name to IP addresses and server does the conversion job and provides the IP address of the particular hostname.

The DNS perform the job so that we can work globally and access Internet from anywhere in the world. Actually the physical location of IP addresses might be changes, however the domain name will remain same and therefore DNS also works as Internet directory. DNS also delivers the email at the particular address.

Actually a DNS is the most important part of the Internet and you cannot access Internet or send or receive an email without these. It actually works as the large distributed database and within milliseconds you get the web page you want to open. So, you can imagine, how quick is the network of these fastest and largest database. For ease and convenience DNS servers are primary and secondary and if primary server is out of order or not in service, the secondary server will automatically work.

If you want to know information about a particular website, you start browsing the website. Your browser immediately searches the organization, which is responsible for maintaining records for top-level domain. For example for the top-level domain .com, Network Solutions, Inc, is responsible and a domain name ending with .com will be immediately routed to the IP address of Network solutions or a root server so that the domain name, you are browsing is matched with the available domain name and correct IP address is returned back to your browser so that the required web page is loaded to your system.

Although the task is very complex and quite complicated, as there are many top-level domains and daily many more domains are being added to the Internet. We should also not forget that at present we use billions of IP addresses and further many IP addresses and domains names changes daily. Being one of the largest network on earth, we access Internet several times a day and make billions of DNS request and even we are able to get the results in milliseconds and this is the speed of our fast computing DNS servers and we should be proud on the system our engineers and scientists have developed for us.
